Message from the Chair
The Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs was established at The Ohio State University in 1975 to facilitate the examination and understanding of the impact of science and technology on people. The Battelle Endowment supports projects that aim to: provide a critical examination of the complex relationship between science and technology and the needs and aspirations of individuals and societies; increase awareness of the capabilities and limitation of technology; and serve the university and broader community.
Through an annual program of grants managed by the Office of Academic Affairs, the Battelle Endowment funds innovative approaches that emphasize education and public service or outreach rather than pure research. Past projects have been initiated by Ohio State University faculty members from every department and college on campus, as well as from the university's regional campuses. Proposals must be initiated by a regular full-time faculty member to be considered.
The Battelle Endowment Committee is charged with identifying outstanding proposals that clearly address the Battelle mission. A particular goal is to foster programs likely to influence future leaders so that they become more knowledgeable about, and engaged with, the relationship between science and technology and broader social and cultural issues. As you begin to develop your proposal, please consult the mission statement on the Web site. We encourage you to imagine projects that bring together expertise from two or more disciplines or institutional partners. We are especially interested in proposals that envision collaborative opportunities for faculty, students, and community members. Evidence of other support (e.g., matching funds) is encouraged and preferred, although not required.
The Battelle Endowment Committee carefully considers the focus of each proposed project, which must be self-contained, as well as its potential for success. To ensure that the committee can give your proposal full and fair consideration, please follow the submission instructions and deadlines given on the Web site. If you have any questions regarding your proposal, please contact the Battelle Endowment Coordinator. The committee looks forward to supporting projects that continue the tradition of diverse and innovative work established by previous Battelle Endowment projects.
