Promotion and tenure
Among the most important decisions made at The Ohio State University are the promotion of its faculty members and the awarding of tenure to those whose excellence in scholarship and creative work, teaching, and service can be expected to promote and enhance the academic integrity of this institution.
- Promotion is the advancement in rank of a tenure-track or tenured faculty member. Promotion recognizes the maturity and quality of a faculty member’s performance of academic duties and is based upon merit.
- Tenure is the university’s career-long commitment to a faculty member to ensure the continuous freedom to study, teach, and conduct extramural activities. Tenure is an earned privilege, not an entitlement.
The reputation of The Ohio State University rests primarily on the quality of its tenured faculty. An impartial, thorough-going, and systematic appraisal of every candidate for promotion in rank and for the award of indefinite tenure is therefore crucial.
The Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for developing and promulgating the procedural guidelines for promotion and tenure reviews to supplement Chapter 3335-6 of the Administrative Code. These guidelines provide common criteria and procedures for promotion and tenure for all Ohio State University faculty in the professorial ranks. They express the university’s expectations of its faculty in the most consequential professional activities: original research, scholarship, and creative work; teaching, advising, and other contributions to students’ academic experiences; and institutional, professional, and public service. The guidelines also affirm to interested parties everywhere that The Ohio State University holds itself to the highest standards, commensurate with its ranking as a Research I public land-grant university.
