Martha M. Garland
Vice Provost for Enrollment Services and Dean for Undergraduate Education
Martha M. Garland has been involved in university administration since 1992, serving first as associate dean of the College of Humanities and—since 1996—as vice provost and dean for undergraduate education.
Throughout her career, she has been active in university governance and service. In 1994-95 she co-chaired the university-wide Committee on the Undergraduate Experience (CUE), whose report since its publication has framed OSU's institutional agenda in matters concerning students and undergraduate education. The thrust of the office over the last decade, through enrollment management systems, has been to improve the academic profile of the undergraduate student body and then, through various academic initiatives, to oversee the enhancement of services provided to these stronger students.
Vice Provost Garland has been a member of the History faculty since 1982. Her research interests include modern British cultural and intellectual history. Her publications focus on the history of universities and on late 19th-century widespread loss of religious faith.
She earned her B.A. degree from Tulane University and University of London, her M.A. from Cornell University, and her Ph.D. from Ohio State. She came to Ohio State in 1975.
