Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Faculty Resources

MARCH 8, 2019 -- Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost, the Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Faculty Resources provides university-wide leadership in the areas of academic policy and academic personnel policy; identifies appropriate policy; gathers data to frame discussions on institutional issues; and facilitates the development of culture. The vice provost is responsible and has direct oversight of promotion and tenure for the entire university, academic personnel appointments and compensation approvals, dual-career hiring program, special opportunity hiring program, counteroffer program, pattern of administration and appointments, promotion and tenure documents and faculty award programs.  The vice provost oversees the Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Program, department chairs and faculty members. The vice provost handles all faculty personnel issues including, but not limited to, conflict resolution and senior hiring. The vice provost provides advice and counsel on faculty matters to university leaders. The vice provost supervises the Ombudsman and the University Senate.  The vice provost is the primary liaison/partner with the Office of Human Resources, the Office of Legal Affairs and the Office of Compliance and Integrity. The vice provost serves as the designee for the Executive Vice President and Provost on many university committees.

Candidates for the Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Faculty Resources should have a distinguished record as a scholar and teacher, should have a PhD or an equivalent earned doctorate, and must be a tenured Ohio State faculty member at the rank of professor. In addition, all candidates should possess the following:

  • Demonstrated leadership, strategic thinking, and administrative experience in education, with an appreciation for the changing landscape of higher education, research;
  • A strong record of performance, with an ability to motivate others to provide the highest quality educational experience;
  • Deep appreciation and unwavering commitment to excellence within the full range of academic disciplines represented at the university;
  • A proven track record as a change agent;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills that gain the confidence, trust and respect of a variety of internal and external constituents;
  • Dedication to creating a more diverse, inclusive and open environment at the university and to promoting diversity in all aspects of university life;
  • Budget acumen with complex fiscal issues, experience with sponsored research and external funding, and comfort in asking questions of others with expertise in these areas;
  • Commitment to creating a positive work environment for staff, an instinct for collaboration, and the ability to navigate various administrative environments;
  • High standards of personal and academic integrity, intellectual curiosity, innovative and creative problem solving, with a willingness to take calculated risks; and
  • Respect for Ohio State’s culture and a commitment to ensure that new strategic plans advance the university’s mission, values, and core goals.
