"Maximum Extent 'Appropriate' or 'Possible': Which is it for Placement in the Regular Classroom?"

September 9, 2020
4-5 p.m.

The purpose of this presentation is to offer suggestions for correcting the confusion surrounding the Least Restrictive Environment [LRE] mandate of the Individuals with Disabilities Act. IDEA does not require inclusion or mainstreaming in every case; instead the requirement is to meet the strong congressional preference for integration of special needs students with students without disabilities. The question is, “What is that preference”? Attendees will hear updates in special education law regarding least restrictive environment and how it is interpreted by courts and legislatures. In addition, attendees will hear information on the implementation and administration of special education in this ever-evolving area of law and practice.
