Charlene Gilbert

Charlene D. Gilbert

We write to share the news that Charlene D. Gilbert, MFA, dean and director of The Ohio State University at Lima and professor in the Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, has accepted the position of dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Toledo, effective July 10th. She will continue in her role at the Lima campus through June, and we will communicate in the near future about leadership decisions.

The Lima campus has flourished under Dean Gilbert's leadership. For example, during the past year the campus had its first enrollment increase in six years, its highest 1st year retention rate in six years and the highest percentage of underrepresented minority students in the history of the campus. In addition, the Lima campus has focused on ensuring that all students on the campus have the support needed to be successful inside and outside of the classroom. These efforts included doubling the size of the Generation One Learning community for first generation college students and expanding the Honors program. Because of this strategic focus on student success and completion, in Autumn 2016, the campus experienced a 6.8% increase in its 4-year graduation rate and a 56.7% increase in its 5-year graduation rate.

In addition to a campus-wide focus on student success in the classroom, Gilbert also initiated WeServe, a service campaign designed to integrate students into the local communities and to lay the groundwork for a commitment to a life of service and civic engagement. During the past year, students, faculty and staff have donated more than 3,000 hours of service.

Lastly, during the past three years the campus has experienced several improvements and enhancements, including a new food pantry for students in need, a recycling program, and the recent groundbreaking for the new Perry Webb Student Life Building, a 15,000-square-foot, $5.2M facility that will provide students with collaboration workspaces, a student lounge, and a fitness center.

Dean Gilbert joined Ohio State in 2014 after having served as chair of the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Toledo.

Please join me in thanking Charlene for her outstanding leadership of our Lima campus and in congratulating her on her new position at the University of Toledo.
