I have been privileged and grateful to serve as your provost for the past two years. This university is very special due to its outstanding people. I am humbled by the warmth you have shown me and your commitment to and aspirations for academic life at Ohio State.
As Acting President Mohler shared a short time ago, I will be departing Ohio State at the end of the autumn semester to become the 11th president of Boston University. While I look forward to sharing some additional thoughts in the weeks ahead, I wanted to write directly to Ohio State’s academic community to share my heartfelt appreciation for all that you do.
Our faculty have the responsibility of creating an academically rigorous environment through scholarship, outreach, academic programs, and clinical care. Through our Office of Faculty Affairs, we have invested in faculty across the career lifecycle by having funding, programs, and support structures in place for recruiting, developing, and advancing scholars. With your leadership and support, we are being more strategic with how we attract, admit, yield, and develop students across our campuses and online programs. Along the way, we have implemented new programs and pathways, including on our regional campuses, to ensure an Ohio State education can be affordable and accessible. We also have increased our academic engagement with communities around Ohio, the nation, and the globe; elevated the arts and humanities; advanced a university culture that is broadly diverse and wholly inclusive; and built enhanced infrastructure to support Ohio State through technology, operations, and data.
Ohio State is a tremendous university with so much potential for the future. This potential rests with the university’s greatest asset — its people.
I am deeply grateful to each of you.
Melissa L. Gilliam
Executive Vice President and Provost
