Norman Jones named vice provost and dean for undergraduate education

Dear Colleagues,

I am excited to announce that Norman W. Jones, dean and director of Ohio State Mansfield, will be Ohio State’s vice provost and dean for undergraduate education, effective July 1.

As vice provost and dean for undergraduate education, Norman will lead the vision for challenging and transformative academic experiences for Ohio State undergraduate students on all our campuses. He will report directly to Charlene Gilbert, senior vice provost for student academic excellence, and be responsible for guiding the development of undergraduate educational experiences and outcomes. His appointment is subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.

A professor in the Department of English, Norman has served as dean and director of Ohio State Mansfield since 2017. As dean, he is responsible for leading the promotion, direction, and support of teaching, learning, and research for the 640-acre campus. The Mansfield campus brings Ohio State’s land-grant mission to life in northeast Ohio, where it provides open-access education to the region and drives community engagement through workforce development, arts and culture, and support for area schools.

As dean and director, Norman raised retention rates for underserved and historically underrepresented students, secured more than $3 million in philanthropic gifts, and developed a new strategic plan. Above all, he is a skilled and passionate relationship-builder who has created partnerships across the state and in the Mansfield community. Norman previously served as associate dean of the campus and as the Department of English’s program coordinator for Mansfield.

In his new role, Norman will provide leadership to a reimagined Office of Undergraduate Education, which will include Academic Enrichment, Military and Veterans Services (ROTC), Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO), Undergraduate Education, and Transition and Academic Growth. Every day the staff works across these areas to support our students and provide them with meaningful academic experiences. I am grateful for their effort and commitment to undergraduate students. Norman has already worked closely with many of these groups, and I am eager to see him extend his vision and passion across our campuses.

As Norman transitions into his new role, I know you will join me in thanking Vice Provost and Dean of University Libraries Damon Jaggars, who provided interim leadership for undergraduate education this academic year. Damon’s optimism and compassion have benefited our students and colleagues well, and I look forward to his continued academic leadership and partnership. I am also grateful for the members of the search advisory committee and their valuable contributions during this search process.

We are developing a leadership transition plan for Ohio State Mansfield and will share more in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, join me in congratulating Dean Jones and welcoming him to his new position. We are eager to benefit from his leadership and experience.

Sincerely,

Melissa L. Gilliam
