OIA leadership announcement

Dear Colleagues,

Gil Latz, vice provost for global strategies and international affairs, has shared that he will step down when his term concludes at the end of 2023.

Since 2019, Gil has led the Office of International Affairs (OIA), and we are grateful for his steady counsel, particularly as we navigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, Gil and his team provided invaluable support for our international students and scholars while reimagining global education as the pandemic affected international travel and programming. Since then, Gil and his team have worked hard to safely return hundreds of students to robust education abroad opportunities.

During Gil’s tenure, Ohio State increased its number of international partnerships, established faculty advisors for our Global Gateways in Brazil, China, and India, and secured renewed Title VI funding for its Area Studies Centers. Ohio State was also named one of only five institutions to be a top producer of Fulbright scholars and students. In addition, Gil developed an International Strategic Plan for Ohio State that called out the important role that universities can play if they are global in orientation, reach, and reputation.

Gil also has served in national leadership roles representing Ohio State, including as senior associate for internationalization for the American Council on Education and as executive committee chair for the APLU Commission on International Initiatives.

We very much appreciate OIA’s team of dedicated colleagues for all they have done, and continue to do, to support the campus community and provide transformative experiences for our students.

We will continue to benefit from Gil’s leadership as we head into 2023, and we will have more opportunities to recognize his service and commitment. During the coming months, we will share additional details around the leadership transition for OIA, including the search advisory committee and timeline.

Sincerely,

Ryan J. Schmiesing
