Reappointment of William MacDonald as dean and director of Ohio State Newark

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to recommend the reappointment of William L. MacDonald, PhD, as dean and director of The Ohio State University at Newark. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, his reappointment is effective July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2024.

Dean MacDonald led the development of the campus's new strategic plan, which focuses on student success by expanding academic programming, advancing access and affordability, and enhancing the student experience. Under his leadership during the past five years, the Newark campus expanded the Adena Hall Recreation Center, added campus housing, and set an enrollment record of 2,882 students.

Dean MacDonald has also developed strong relationships with other area institutions, including the co-located Central Ohio Technical College and The Works, which constructed the SciDome planetarium in downtown Newark. Ohio State students attend classes and serve internships at SciDome.

Within Ohio State, Dean MacDonald leads the coordinating council of the deans of the regional campuses as executive dean.  He also serves on several university-wide committees, including Senior Management Council, University Senate, Senate Fiscal Committee and its Student Fees Review Subcommittee.

Dean MacDonald joined Ohio State’s faculty in 1992. He had earned a bachelor’s degree in interpersonal and public communication, and a master’s degree and doctorate in sociology from Bowling Green State University.

Please join me in congratulating Bill as he begins his fourth term. I appreciate Bill's enthusiastic and effective leadership and am confident that more great things lie ahead for the Newark campus.

Sincerely,

Bruce A. McPheron, PhD
