Turro elected to U.S. National Academy of Sciences

Claudia Turro, a professor and chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The NAS is committed to furthering science in America and its members are active contributors to the international scientific community. Members are elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research and membership is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive.

Promotion and tenure approvals 2024

Last month gave around 350 Ohio State faculty members a reason to celebrate as the Board of Trustees approved promotion and tenure recommendations. Each has excelled in the areas of teaching, research and creative accomplishments, and service. Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Karla Zadnik and the Office of Academic Affairs are proud to recognize these achievements and contributions to the university.

MacArthur Foundation launches global 100&Change competition

The MacArthur Foundation has announced the 100&Change competition for a $100 million grant to address a critical social challenge. Proposals from any field are welcome; they must identify a big problem and provide an impactful, evidence-based, feasible, durable and just solution. Community stakeholder collaboration is required on a national to global scale. Use the Organizational Readiness tool to assess your proposal's eligibility.

In the final episode of season 1, Arnab Nandi, associate professor of computer science and engineering, and Ben Webb, corporate partnerships consultant, delve deep into the world of corporate partnerships and unveil the strategies and insights that leaders can employ to drive these collaborations to new heights. Season 2 of the Faculty Affairs Leadership Podcast will launch in August.

Faculty workload guideline update

Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Karla Zadnik charged a Faculty Workload Taskforce in January with reviewing and revising the faculty workload guidelines that were redesigned in 2023 by a subcommittee of the Tenure Track Faculty Compensation Committee.

This taskforce also considered feedback provided by University Senate leaders to formalize recommendations to help ensure that academic units are distributing workload fairly and equitably and with greater transparency and consistency, and that Ohio State complies with Faculty Rule 3335-5-07.

All Chairs Retreat 2024

The inaugural All Chairs Retreat provided a valuable opportunity for building and strengthening relationships with fellow chairs while also gaining insight into leadership philosophy and expectations — fostering a collaborative and supportive network. Conversation, connection and smiles were aplenty.

Is your unit kicking off the season for faculty searches? Start with the tutorial on the SHIFT framework, where you can learn about the six distinct phases, each of which includes a series of required action steps.

Telling Your Story online workshop

All faculty preparing their dossier for promotion and tenure review are invited to register for the online Telling Your Story workshop. Access to the Canvas course is provided through the registration (NOTE: please include your name.# so that we can automatically give you access to the course). You can review the virtual presentation (22 min.) to have a sense of the type of materials and exercises this workshop offers to help attendees build their professional narratives.

You do not need to be going up for promotion next year to benefit from this workshop. Everyone planning to write a promotional dossier in the future is welcome. All participants will learn how to create a compelling professional narrative, including presenting interdisciplinary work to different audiences, and clearly identify themselves as their story's central character.

OAA Faculty Fellow nominations due June 15

The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) is accepting applications for a Faculty Fellow position for the 2024-25 academic year. The Faculty Fellow will dedicate 50% of their time developing and implementing a university-wide faculty mentoring initiative. Deadline to apply is June 15.

New Faculty Orientation

The 2024 New Faculty Orientation will be held on Aug. 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Ohio Union, and all new hires are strongly recommended to attend this beneficial event that complements their college/unit orientation. Attendees will have an opportunity to enter a raffle to win tickets to the first Ohio State football game of the 2024 season on Aug. 31 vs. Akron.
