Caroline C. Whitacre

As senior vice president for research, Caroline C. Whitacre oversees the university's efforts to stimulate new research and support ongoing activities, which currently include $934 million in research expenditures.

Prior to her current appointment, she was associate vice president for health sciences research and vice dean for research in the College of Medicine, and director of the School of Biomedical Science. She is a professor and former chair of the Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology, and Medical Genetics. She joined the Ohio State faculty in 1981.

A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Vice President Whitacre is a leading authority on autoimmune disease. She has received continuous research support from the National Institutes of Health since 1982 and currently has research support from NIH, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Ohio State has honored her with a Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service and recognition as a University Distinguished Scholar.

Vice President Whitacre received her B.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Ohio State and completed postdoctoral training in microbiology and immunology at Northwestern University Medical School.
