Celebrating the Semiquincentennial: Honoring 250 Years of United States History
As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026, The Ohio State University is proud to contribute to this historic celebration. Rooted in our land-grant mission established by the Morrill Act of 1862, Ohio State is committed to fostering public understanding and engagement through innovative teaching, groundbreaking research and community engagement — serving the Buckeye State and beyond.
By combining our land-grant legacy with the America 250 celebration, Ohio State will showcase its reputation as a center for dynamic research and meaningful community involvement. We are uniquely positioned to inspire reflection on our shared history, embrace the challenges and promises of the present and forge pathways toward a brighter, united future for all.
What's Ahead: A Year of Discovery and Dialogue
Throughout 2026, Ohio State will host a diverse array of programming designed to spark conversation and deepen understanding about the meaning and evolution of America. Our goal is to spotlight the achievements, struggles, innovations and significance of all people — across Ohio and the nation — from before the founding to today.
To maximize our reach and impact, Ohio State is collaborating with passionate community partners and stakeholders across Ohio and the country. Coordinating with the Ohio Commission for America250 and organizations like Ohio History Connection, Ohio State will help to promote meaningful statewide outreach and engagement, as well as national and international conversations on the people, ideas and events that have helped to shape the contemporary U.S.
We will prioritize partnerships with organizations in Columbus, at all regional campuses locations and across the state. Through these partnerships, we will host talks, panels, art installations, film screenings, and events — especially at our regional campuses and in collaboration with statewide communities. These programs will encourage honest exploration of American history, led by Ohio State experts and community voices, and highlight the university’s strengths in public education and outreach.
