A reporter talks to students

AI Fluency initiative featured on CBS Evening News

In September, CBS Evening News Plus came to Ohio State to cover the AI Fluency initiative, calling it a "first in the nation initiative." Kevin Richards, assistant teaching professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature, was interviewed in the story about his section of the newly AI-embedded General Education Launch Seminar and what lessons students will take away from it.

"I hope that they learn how to use it effectively for brainstorming, for organizing thoughts, but they don’t replace their critical thought with it," he said.

Michael Flierl

Quick AI tip for instructors

Michael Flierl, Office of Academic Affairs Faculty Fellow for AI and associate professor/student learning librarian at University Libraries, shares a simple exercise to help students develop critical thinking when using AI:

Ask students to use Gemini Deep Research (in Tools) to collect information on a topic. Have them repeat the search using Google and the University Libraries’ website. What was similar? What was different? Compare and contrast the results, discussing differences in scope, quality, perspective or presentation of information.

The goal is to help students:

  • Evaluate information and AI models critically
  • Understand how different tools shape what information they see
  • Build AI fluency by using AI in disciplinary-authentic ways
