AI Fluency initiative developing critical skills for Ohio State students

Bryan Weaver, a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and a member of Ohio State's Center for Ethics and Human Values Steering Committee, encourages us to pause and consider what AI truly means for society. 

The Translational Data Analytics Institute is accepting applications through June 14, 2026, for TDAI's faculty-led yearlong research programs. These are 18-month-long efforts designed to catalyze bold, transformative research with the potential to shape the future of data science and AI in science and society.

The retreat brought together more than 100 professors and PhD students across all five departments at Fisher to build connections through faculty and doctoral research presentations, research posters and thematic roundtable discussions highlighting AI.

The transition at Ohio State was not about replacing human judgment with an "autopilot" system. Instead, it was about leveraging AI as a high-powered research assistant to break the manual bottleneck. The framework relies on critical operational guardrails to ensure results are accurate and trustworthy. 

The idea for Nightwave AI began in July, when Neel Rayani, a second-year in computer science and engineering, said he started thinking about how AI could be applied to public safety.
